Cows, Culture, and Quiet Coexistence
A deep relationship has long existed between cows and humans in India. Across the country, it’s a common sight—cows roaming freely on roads, sitting calmly in the middle of bustling traffic, "chilling and chewing" without a care in the world. They are not just animals here; they are part of the social fabric, cared for like family, raised with affection, and mourned when they are gone.
During a recent visit to Goa, I witnessed a sight that added a new layer to this connection. This time, the cows weren’t on the roads or in the markets—they were strolling along the beach. No herder, no fences. Just cows walking from one end of the shore to the other, seemingly without direction, yet with a quiet confidence that they knew exactly where they were headed. Maybe they knew where home was. Maybe, in their simplicity, they understood something we often forget: how to belong without needing control.
In Indian culture, cows have long been seen as symbols of purity and peace. Revered by some, respected by all, they exist in a space that transcends religious lines. Hindus may worship them; Muslims may regard them as spiritually significant. But beyond religion, they embody a calm presence that coexists with the chaos of daily life.
Through my photo series, I invite you to observe these gentle creatures. Look closely. Feel the peace they carry. In their stillness, there is something profoundly human—a reminder of patience, trust, and quiet freedom.
